Mall Maul v00.00.02 – Physics-Driven Movement, Sliding, Custom Controls & First Blockout Map!


🔔 Devlog #4 (v00.00.02)

It’s been 13 days since prototype v00.00.01—here’s everything new, what’s broken, and where we’re headed!

🎉 New in v00.00.02

  1. Prototype Blockout Map

    • Full mall layout blockout: food courts, shops, corridors & seating.

    • Each area is a separate StaticBody3D with its own collision shape for robust walks and slides.

    • Neutral greyscale for rapid iteration before adding textures & art.

  2. Physics-Driven Character Controller

    • Switched to CharacterBody3D—built-in gravity, slope snap, floor detection.

    • Jump (Space) & true falls off ledges instead of instant drops.

  3. Sprint & Slide Mechanics

    • Hold ⇧ Shift to sprint; hit Ctrl while sprinting + on floor to slide.

    • Slide has its own collider height reduction, duration timer & cooldown.

  4. Ragdoll Mode

    • Press R to swap into a RigidBody3D ragdoll at your current transform—perfect for testing crashes or fun slow-mo falls.

  5. Mouse Look & Camera Clamp

    • Free yaw, clamped pitch between –10° (down) and +30° (up).

    • Esc toggles cursor visibility for UI navigation.

  6. Custom Keybind Registration

    • All default inputs (W/A/S/D, Shift, Ctrl, Space, R) are registered in code—future in-game rebind UI coming soon.

  7. Exposed Tuning Parameters

    • Speeds, durations, gravity, sensitivities are @export variables—tweak them live in the Inspector.

🐛 Known Bugs

  • Player Launch: Occasionally, stepping off edges or colliding at speed catapults the character in one direction.

  • Slow Frame Rates: Large blockout map sections can drop FPS—especially with multiple collision meshes active.

We’re investigating both the movement code and collision mesh setup to straighten these out.

🔮 What’s Next

  • Map Modeling & Props: Begin replacing grey blocks with real walls, floors, kiosks & basic props you can whack.

  • NPC Shoppers: Implement simple AI pathfinding for wandering customers.

  • Performance Optimizations: Merge collision meshes, LOD, and cull unseen sections to boost FPS.

  • Rebindable Controls UI: Ship an in-game menu so you can map keys however you like.
